Abstract

Raindrop diametter measuring is great significance for many applications in wave propagation, erosion, meteorological, atmospheric physic research, troposphere structure measurement... It is impossible to measure raindrop parameters with the tipping bucket rain gauge used in common. To measure raindrop diametter and other parameters of raindrops, there are other device lines. Depending on the used physical principle, it can be divided into types of devices: impact, image and optical devices. Overcoming the disadvantages such as not being able to measure the speed, large noise of the impact devices, bulky, difficult to transport, deploy and install, high cost of image devices, optical devices have become a reasonable choice in raindrop diametter measurement. In this group, raindrop diametter measurement method based on two light bands and calculated according to the modulation depth is researched to improve because it does not depend on the speed of drop. This article has pointed out the limitations of the current method and the improvements in hardware of the device, the calculation method, the raindrop diametter calculation algorithm to improve the measurement efficiency. Test results show the effectiveness of the recommendations which are positive signals for a better raindrop diametter product line.
